It’s no secret that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the job-search experience. Between candidates using it to refine submissions, employers leveraging automation, and roles evolving to embrace new technology, it stands to reason that people feel AI has made the market more competitive, with 45% of Gen Z saying it’s become harder to stand out*.
Reassuringly for candidates, there is still a huge appetite for human talent and critical thinking, with many firms agreeing the need for these skills has never been more profound. Alongside this, good recruiters and their hiring teams are continuing to invest in person-to-person interactions and authentic communication, putting people at the heart of the hiring process – which we’re all for!
In my role, I work closely with candidates every day, speaking to them about opportunities, getting a feel for their qualities and ambitions, and sharing insights that will contribute to their success. Forging connections and building relationships is so rewarding and absolutely remains the foundation of our work at Ryder Reid.
The opportunity to get yourself and your potential in front of the right employer has not diminished, and here I’ve shared three actionable strategies for navigating a human job search in the AI era!
1. Demonstrate critical thinking
Although AI can be used to prep, it is you who hiring panels will ultimately assess and interview (we find that in Business Services in particular, many hiring panels will have testing exercises as part of the selection process) and this is where you can show your additional talents - the ones tech can't match.
Alongside your technical expertise, 2026 is about emphasising your critical thinking, as well as awareness, judgement, discernment, and ability to read nuance and rationalise. These are the irreplaceable human skills which are increasingly important to employers (thanks to AI throwing a spotlight on their value), and hiring teams are closely looking out for them. These are also the qualities our Consultants channel into unbeatable candidate support!
2. Keep your research balanced
Our research and on-the-ground experience tells us we’re in a candidate-led market, and you deserve to find a role that fits your unique skills, ambition, and potential, and to match with an employer who aligns with your values. Spending plenty of time on this step of your search is crucial for securing your ideal job and long-term career satisfaction.
Although AI is useful for quickly gaining information about prospective employers (such as employer brand, employee satisfaction, opportunities, reviews) candidates are wise to balance this with their own judgements, as well as the guidance of a recruiter. At Ryder Reid, our support includes adeptly sharing knowledge of each hiring firm, to help candidates decide if they want to go for a role.
Niche market insights, real-world intel (which quality recruiters will have in abundance!), your own personal experience and what feels right to you, should all be part of the equation.
3. Enlist the support of a recruitment ally
Although automated tools can help to hone your CV and tighten your market knowledge, experienced recruitment consultants go the step further.
We love working closely with candidates to connect them with opportunities that we know align beautifully with their skills and ambitions, based on our genuine knowledge of them and the hiring firm. This is what makes us People-first!
As well as providing practical guidance, at Ryder Reid we:
- take the time to invest in getting to know you – starting with registration and then working closely with you to outline your motivations
- help you to define your goals, consider your options and weigh up offers
- offer personalised feedback and guidance, investing time in getting to know your needs, and your career ambitions
- be your sounding board and advisor
- keep you updated with the wider market and let you know as things change
- boost your confidence, motivate you, and help you land your dream role
Although it’s been really exciting to discover all the positives that advancing tech can unlock for our candidates - such as better inclusion, social mobility and efficiency we know that really great things happen when people connect.
